A Gothic corset represents the Gothic subculture. People who are into this fetish costume are often labeled as mysterious yet alluring and anti-social yet attractive. The design of a Gothic corset was heavily influenced by the post-Victorian era, evident by the usual lace and ribbon. The color is mostly black or dark to depict the Dark Ages and medieval times. The classic look is highlighted by the rich fabric, intricate patterns and embossed designs.

Similar to a traditional corset, Gothic corsets are often made by corsetry tailors. They are very keen on the measurements of the wearer and make sure the corset fits to a tee. Today, many stores specialize in Gothic outfits, including corsets. There are corsets for every type of body, from the very petite lady to a plus sized woman. Some personalized corsets have boning so the body looks even sexier, but those manufactured commercially are made in general sizes.

Some Gothic corsets are in the form of corset dresses. These garments often have slits that can go as high as the knee up to the thigh. The corset is usually made from either silk or satin, while the sides are only found on the sides. Typically, there are chiffons on the breast area to enhance the appearance of the bosom.

Gothic corsets may project gloomy outlook, but that doesn't reduce the allure of the wearer.
