There are instances where pets get injured. They may be running on the
road when suddenly, a car hits them. There are instances where they may
have been fighting with another animal. There are also those where they
accidentally hit a sharp object or fell from higher grounds.
In these instances, their bodies may get cut and wounded and bandages are needed to cover them. Most pet owners use cones for dogs
to prevent these dogs from licking their wounds or from chewing the
bandages. However, some of them are not keen on the idea of wearing
these cones around their necks. For this, several tips are provided to
help the dog feel comfortable with this product.
The item should be one that is recommended by the veterinarian. The size
of the hole should fit into the neck of the pet. If a person decides to
purchase one on his own, it should be approved by the veterinarian. It
should not be too loose that he can remove this easily. It should also
not be too tight which could rub on his skin, which will cause him pain.
If the dog is uncomfortable with the item on when he goes outside or
through doors, he needs to be lead around for a few days. He will be
assured that his safety is ensured when he goes to other areas with this
thing on. If the pet is not budging, the individual should not be
forcing him in going somewhere. In these instances, dogs will have
lesser peripheral visions so he his path should be cleared from other
objects.
It is essential for him to drink water and eat food. However, it is
difficult for him to perform these actions if he has this commodity on.
He may get very messy as well as only get little amounts of water and
food. It will be more easier if he drinks and eats on bowls placed in
elevated areas.
The cone should be checked regularly. Aside from that, the area around
the neck should also be checked regularly. There should be no debris nor
signs of irritation on the skin. In case there are any, a doctor should
be contacted immediately.
The pet needs to be cleaned, especially at these times. The owner will
have to use a small brush to remove hair from that area. The face should
also be cleaned without having to remove the cone, unless the doctor
instructs the owner to do so.
If the dog is fully supervised, the item may be removed for short
periods of time. However, the owner has to get the permission of the
doctor first. He might agree taking short breaks if the pet cooperates
when removing the item.
It will also help if treats are being provided to the pet whenever he is
not complaining about this thing he is wearing. These treats are
actually part of a reward system where dogs will try do to things
regularly just to be able to get treats. In extreme cases, sedatives can
also be administered to the animal. This will be for the best interest
of the dog.
